Manhattan Laser Centers has treated men of all skin types and hair types since 1999. Back, chest, beard sculpting, shoulders, arms, stomach — we do it all, and we do it with the discretion that men appreciate. If you’ve been thinking about it, a free consultation takes 20–30 minutes and tells you exactly what to expect before you spend a dollar.

Why Men Are Choosing Laser Hair Removal

The request has shifted. It used to be that laser hair removal was considered something women did. That’s changed significantly — and for straightforward reasons.

Back and shoulder hair: Shaving your own back is impractical. Waxing requires repeated appointments and grows back. Laser hair removal for the back and shoulders is a one-time investment that eliminates both the hair and the maintenance. It’s one of the most common treatments we do for men.

Ingrown hairs: Men who shave their neck, chest, or bikini area frequently deal with ingrown hairs and razor bumps — especially men with coarser or curly hair. Laser hair removal eliminates the follicle, which eliminates the ingrown. Clients who switched from shaving to laser for their neck and chest often report the improvement in skin texture is as valuable as the hair removal.

Beard sculpting: Laser hair removal can permanently define a beard line. By removing hair from the cheeks and neck that falls outside your preferred beard shape, you create a clean, permanent line that no longer requires regular shaving. The beard itself is untouched — only the surrounding hair is removed.

Grooming efficiency: Significant reduction in the time and cost spent on razors, wax appointments, and upkeep. For men who travel frequently or have demanding schedules, removing the grooming overhead is a practical decision, not a vanity one.

Treatment Areas for Men

We treat all areas for male clients. The most common requests, in order:

Back and Shoulders: One of the largest treatment areas. Sessions take 30–45 minutes depending on coverage. Most clients complete the back and shoulders in 6–8 sessions with significant permanent reduction.

Chest and Stomach: Treated together or separately. Many men choose a full torso treatment covering chest, stomach, and back as a combined package.

Beard Sculpting / Beard Line Definition: Laser removes the cheek and neck hair outside your beard line — permanently. You define the shape you want during the consultation. The beard itself is not treated.

Neck: The transition from beard to neck is a common trouble spot for ingrown hairs and razor bumps. Laser hair removal for the neck eliminates the follicles causing the problem.

Arms: Upper arms, forearms, or full arms. Common for athletes and men who prefer a cleaner look.

Bikini and Brazilian for Men: Yes — we treat the male bikini area and provide full Brazilian treatments for male clients. This is a common request and is handled with complete professionalism and privacy.

Ears and Nose: We treat ear hair and the outer nose area. Quick sessions, significant quality-of-life improvement.

Hands and Feet: Knuckle hair and foot hair are easily treated with minimal sessions required.

What to Expect — Treating Male Skin

Male skin is generally thicker than female skin, and male body hair tends to be coarser and denser — particularly on the back, chest, and beard area. This affects treatment in a few ways:

Coarser, darker hair actually responds very well to laser treatment — the laser targets melanin (pigment) in the hair follicle, and dense dark hair provides more target to work with. Men with coarse dark hair on a lighter skin background typically see strong results.

Treatment settings are calibrated to each individual. We use Alexandrite for lighter skin tones and Nd:YAG for darker skin tones. During your consultation, we assess your Fitzpatrick skin type, examine hair density, and recommend appropriate settings before any treatment begins.

Session spacing for body areas is typically 4–8 weeks. The back and chest may require sessions spaced slightly further apart than facial areas due to the density of the hair growth cycle in those regions.

One note for men considering beard sculpting: the face typically responds slightly more slowly than body areas because facial hair has a more active growth cycle. Expect 6–8 sessions for beard line definition, spaced 4–6 weeks apart.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Does laser hair removal work on gray or light hair?

Laser targets melanin — so gray, white, and very light blonde hair does not absorb the laser effectively. If your body hair is dark, you’re an excellent candidate. If you have mixed gray and dark hair, we can treat the dark hairs present and assess during the consultation.

  • Is laser hair removal painful for men?

Most men describe the sensation as a snapping or pinching feeling. Dense body hair areas like the back can feel more intense in spots, but sessions move quickly and are much shorter than waxing. We can adjust settings if any area is uncomfortable.

  • How many sessions does a full back treatment require?

Typically 6–8 sessions spaced 4–8 weeks apart. The back is one of the larger treatment areas and may require the upper end of that range depending on hair density.

  • Can I come in for a consultation without committing to treatment?

Yes. Consultations are completely free and there’s no obligation to book. We’ll assess your skin and hair, tell you honestly what results are realistic, and give you a per-session and package price. Many clients find that talking through the specifics first makes the decision easy.

  • Do you see many male clients?

We do. Approximately one-third of our active clients are men. You won’t be the only one, and the clinical environment is professional and private.

Whether it’s the back, beard line, chest, or something else — come in and talk to us first. The consultation is free, takes about 20–30 minutes, and gives you a real picture of what laser hair removal will do for you before you commit to anything.
