Why Dark Skin Requires a Different Laser

Standard laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment (melanin) in the hair follicle with a concentrated beam of light. The follicle absorbs the heat and is permanently disabled. The problem for darker skin tones is that the skin itself also contains melanin — meaning a laser that isn’t calibrated correctly will target both the hair and the surrounding skin, causing burns, hyperpigmentation, or scarring.

This is not a reason to avoid laser hair removal. It’s a reason to choose the right provider.

The two lasers most commonly used for hair removal work very differently on dark skin:

Alexandrite laser (755nm): Highly effective for light to medium skin tones. Shorter wavelength — more aggressive absorption of melanin. Not recommended for Fitzpatrick types IV and above without very precise calibration.

Nd:YAG laser (1064nm): The gold standard for dark and deeper skin tones. Longer wavelength bypasses surface melanin and targets the follicle directly, dramatically reducing the risk of skin damage. Safe and effective for Fitzpatrick types IV, V, and VI.

Manhattan Laser Centers uses both the Nd:YAG and Alexandrite lasers. For clients with darker skin, we use Nd:YAG exclusively.

The Fitzpatrick Scale — Where Does Your Skin Fit?

The Fitzpatrick scale classifies skin types I through VI based on how skin responds to UV exposure. It’s the clinical standard laser technicians use to determine which laser is appropriate and at what settings.

Fitzpatrick Type I–III: Fair to medium skin. Alexandrite or Nd:YAG both appropriate depending on hair color and density.

Fitzpatrick Type IV: Olive to light brown skin. Nd:YAG strongly preferred. Alexandrite can be used with conservative settings and experienced technicians.

Fitzpatrick Type V: Brown skin. Nd:YAG only. Lower fluence settings required, more sessions may be needed.

Fitzpatrick Type VI: Deep brown to black skin. Nd:YAG only. Requires the most conservative settings and the most experienced hands.

During your free consultation at Manhattan Laser Centers, we assess your Fitzpatrick type in person, examine your hair color and thickness, and build a treatment plan specific to your skin — including realistic session estimates and expected results.

What to Expect During Treatment

For clients with darker skin tones, we take a conservative, test-patch approach on your first visit:

Consultation: We assess your Fitzpatrick type, examine the treatment area, review your hair growth history, and determine appropriate laser settings. This takes about 20–30 minutes and is completely free.

Test patch: Before your first full treatment session, we treat a small area to confirm your skin responds well to our settings. We review the test patch at your first session.

Treatment sessions: Most areas require 6–8 sessions spaced 4–8 weeks apart. Darker skin tones may require sessions spaced slightly further apart to allow full recovery between treatments. We never rush the schedule.

Hair between sessions: Do not wax, thread, or epilate between sessions — these methods remove the root that the laser needs to target. Shaving between sessions is fine.

What you’ll feel: With Nd:YAG at appropriate settings for darker skin, most clients describe mild warmth and a snapping sensation. Significantly less discomfort than waxing.

Our Experience With Dark Skin Laser Hair Removal

Manhattan Laser Centers has been treating clients of all skin types since 1999 — including clients with deep skin tones who came to us after unsatisfactory or unsafe experiences at other clinics.

Laser hair removal for dark skin requires more than just having the right equipment. It requires technicians who have used that equipment on thousands of patients across every skin type and know how to read skin response, adjust settings conservatively, and recognize when to slow down.

We are not a chain. Every client is treated by our own licensed technicians — not rotating staff. We give honest assessments of what laser hair removal will and won’t achieve for your skin type, and we don’t overbook to rush treatments.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can laser hair removal work on dark skin?

Yes — with the right laser. The Nd:YAG laser (1064nm) is specifically designed for darker skin tones and is the laser we use for Fitzpatrick types IV through VI.

  • Is laser hair removal safe for Black skin?

Yes, when performed by trained technicians using Nd:YAG technology. The longer wavelength of the Nd:YAG laser bypasses surface melanin and targets the hair follicle directly, making it safe for deep skin tones including Fitzpatrick type V and VI.

  • How many sessions will I need if I have dark skin?

Typically 6–8 sessions, similar to lighter skin tones. Depending on your skin type and hair characteristics, we may space sessions slightly further apart to allow optimal skin recovery between treatments.

  • Will the laser cause hyperpigmentation on my dark skin?

With Nd:YAG at proper settings, the risk of hyperpigmentation is very low. This is precisely why we use Nd:YAG rather than Alexandrite for darker skin tones. Our test-patch approach on the first visit confirms your skin responds well before proceeding to a full treatment.

  • What areas can be treated on dark skin?

All areas — underarms, bikini and Brazilian, legs, arms, face, neck, chest, back, and stomach. We treat both women and men.
